    The aquaball concept with external filter technology External filter technology and multi-layer filtration – that means: the water at the bottom is pumped to the top through the various filter layers and after filtration directed back into the tank. The closed filter baskets come prefilled with EHEIM SUBSTRATpro. Other filter media can also be used.  The inlet basket contains a filter cartridge for the mechanical-biological  prefiltration. In the pumphead holder a filter pad provides additional filtration.    By adding or removing filter modules (filter baskets) you can adjust the filter volume as necessary.  For extending the filter use ExtensionSET2 The filter baskets can be easily clipped together and released (Easy-Klick Locking System)  Due to the modular construction the filter cartridges or media can be cleaned at different intervals thus preserving bacteria cultures. The ball shaped pumphead sits in a ball socket and can be turned right round. Thus the outflow of the filtered water can be aimed in any direction.    The pump output and throughflow can be set by the control knob  on the outflow nozzle.    The  power-diffusor is adjusted to regulate the air intake and thus the oxygen enrichment in the aquarium.  (Instead of the diffusor, other extension pieces can be used; see accessories)   The holder for biopower is simply fixed to the glass with suction cups. For cleaning, exchanging modules or filling with filter media, the filter is simply removed from its holder.     Depending on which type, chemical filter media control the pH-value and the water hardness (peat) – or reduce the phosphate level and inhibit the growth of algae (phosphateout).  The pH-value of mains water lies between 7,3 and 7,8 and is therefore slightly alkaline. However, most ornamental fish require acidic water – that is a pH-value under 7,0. EHEIM TORFpellets lower the pH-value and reduce the water hardness.  Phosphates mainly occur due to organic pollutants in the aquarium water (fish remains, fish faeces etc.) and are responsible for the growth of algae. EHEIM phosphateout binds the phosphate and removes it from the water circulation. Chemically acting phosphate remover inhibiting the growth of algae  EHEIM phosphateout is a special iron compound for chemical filtration. The iron binds the phosphate, removing it from the water circulation and thus reducing in stages the phosphate levels in the aquarium. In this way algae growth in the aquarium is inhibited.  If the phosphate levels and consequently the growth of algae starts to in-crease, this means that the filter medium is depleted and must be re-placed. EHEIM phosphateout is available for external filters in granulate form and for internal filters as a foam filter cartridge.     The main task of biological filter media is to offer the best colonisation onditions for the bacteria cultures, so that after a short time a bacteria lawn develops. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kind and convert substances critical for the aquarium. After the first cleaning process by the mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro) the biological filtration is the most important. It provides for clear, healthy water and stabile water values. That’s why we have invested a lot of research work into the development of biological filter media. Tip:Never clean or change all the filter media together in one operation (and never clean too rigorously).
