Antennata Lionfish

Antennata Lionfish – Pterois antennata

The Antennata Lionfish, scientifically known as Pterois antennata, is also commonly referred to as the Ragged-finned Firefish or Spotfin Lionfish. It is one of the most striking lionfish species, admired for its vibrant red, white, and black vertical stripes, large fan-shaped pectoral fins, and long dorsal spines that create a majestic appearance.

Its elongated, widely spaced dorsal spines give the fish a distinctive spiky silhouette, making it one of the most eye-catching lionfish found in marine aquariums. Despite its predatory nature, it has a relatively calm temperament and adapts well once established.

Minimum Tank Size: 190 Liters Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Predatory Reef Compatible: With Caution Diet: Carnivore Size S: 5–7 cm Size M: 7–10 cm Size L: 10–15 cm

Key Features

  • Brilliant red, white, and black striped coloration.
  • Large, elegant pectoral fins that create graceful movement.
  • Long, widely spaced dorsal spines give it a unique appearance.
  • Calm temperament and adapts well once established.
  • Suitable for fish-only aquariums and compatible mixed-species tanks.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 190 liters (50 gallons).
  • Requires plenty of caves and hiding places among live rock.
  • Stable water quality and efficient filtration are recommended.
  • May remain hidden during the first few days while acclimating to its new environment.
  • When first introduced, offering live Ghost Shrimp is recommended to encourage feeding.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Predatory, but generally peaceful
Reef Compatibility With caution
Fish Compatibility Compatible with larger fish that cannot be swallowed
Invertebrate Compatibility May prey on shrimp, crabs, and other small crustaceans

The Antennata Lionfish is generally peaceful toward larger tank mates but will readily prey on small fish, ornamental shrimp, and other crustaceans that fit into its mouth. It is therefore not recommended for reef aquariums containing small ornamental invertebrates.

Warning: The Antennata Lionfish has venomous dorsal, pelvic, and anal spines capable of delivering a painful sting that can be more severe than a bee sting. Always handle this fish with extreme caution during aquarium maintenance or relocation. If stung, immerse the affected area in hot water (approximately 38–43°C / 100–110°F) as soon as possible and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Feeding

Once acclimated, the Antennata Lionfish requires a varied carnivorous diet rich in meaty marine foods to maintain excellent health and vibrant coloration.

Recommended foods include:

  • Live or frozen shrimp.
  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • Small marine fish.
  • Crustacean meat.
  • High-quality frozen foods formulated for predatory marine fish.

Reefamorous Tip: Gradually transition newly imported specimens from live foods to frozen alternatives. Feeding a varied diet helps maintain excellent health, enhances natural coloration, and simplifies long-term care.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Like most lionfish, this species is most active during dawn and dusk and appreciates a rockscape with plenty of shaded hiding places.
