Dog Face Puffer

Dog Face Puffer – Arothron nigropunctatus

The Dog Face Puffer, scientifically known as Arothron nigropunctatus, is also commonly referred to as the Blackspotted Puffer. It is one of the most recognizable marine fish, admired for its dog-like facial features, intelligent behavior, and playful personality. This highly interactive species often learns to recognize its keeper and responds eagerly at feeding time.

Its coloration may vary as it grows. Some individuals display a gray body with dark markings around the mouth, eyes, and dorsal fin, along with distinctive yellow pectoral fins. Another color form features a yellow lower body and a dark gray upper body, sometimes covered with scattered black spots. Once settled into the aquarium, the fish usually maintains one dominant color pattern and rarely changes again.

This species lacks pelvic fins but remains highly maneuverable by using its pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins. Instead of conventional teeth, it has a powerful beak-like dental plate that allows it to crush the shells of crustaceans and mollusks.

Key Features

  • Distinctive dog-like facial appearance.
  • Intelligent and highly interactive personality.
  • Excellent maneuverability within the aquarium.
  • Attractive colors and patterns that vary between individuals.
  • One of the most popular species for fish-only marine aquariums.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 380 liters (100 gallons).
  • Best suited to a fish-only marine aquarium.
  • Requires ample swimming space with suitable hiding places.
  • Needs stable water quality and highly efficient filtration.
  • When transferring the fish, use a container rather than a net, as it may inflate when frightened or stressed.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-peaceful
Reef Compatibility No, not suitable for reef aquariums
Fish Compatibility Can be kept with most medium-sized and large marine fish
Invertebrate Compatibility May prey on shrimp, crabs, snails, and other invertebrates

The Dog Face Puffer can usually be kept with many medium-sized and large marine fish. It may also coexist with certain less-aggressive puffer species when provided with adequate space. However, it is not suitable for reef aquariums because it may feed on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other invertebrates.

Feeding

The Dog Face Puffer requires a varied diet rich in meaty marine foods to support healthy growth, strong coloration, and proper beak maintenance.

Recommended foods include:

  • Squid.
  • Krill.
  • Clams.
  • Whole shell-on shrimp.
  • Hard-shelled crustaceans.
  • High-quality frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Regularly offer hard-shelled foods to help naturally wear down the fish’s continuously growing beak. Without sufficient abrasion, the beak may become overgrown and interfere with normal feeding.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Never encourage or force the fish to inflate, as repeated inflation can cause severe stress and may be harmful to its health.
