Black Leopard Wrasse

Black Leopard Wrasse – Macropharyngodon negrosensis

The Black Leopard Wrasse, scientifically known as Macropharyngodon negrosensis, is also commonly known as the Leopard Wrasse or Yellowspotted Wrasse. It is one of the most beautiful marine wrasses, admired for its distinctive leopard-like pattern. Its dark body is covered with light blue to yellow spots, while the dorsal fin features striking black and white diagonal markings. Some specimens also develop subtle red highlights on the head and tail.

This peaceful species is an excellent choice for mature reef aquariums, where it spends much of its time searching among the live rock and sand for tiny invertebrates and other natural prey.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful reef fish. Keeping groups of three or more individuals introduced at the same time can reduce stress and improve acclimation.
Natural Feeding Behavior Actively searches live rock for microfauna such as Amphipods and Foraminiferans, making a mature aquarium essential for long-term success.

The Black Leopard Wrasse is a peaceful and rewarding species but requires an established reef aquarium rich in natural microfauna. It is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide a mature, stable environment.

Feeding

Once acclimated, the Black Leopard Wrasse requires a varied, protein-rich diet to maintain its health, activity, and vibrant coloration.

Recommended foods include:

  • Vitamin-enriched Mysis Shrimp.
  • Vitamin-enriched Brine Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • High-quality frozen marine foods.
  • Premium marine pellets and flakes.

Reefamorous Tip: Feed several small meals throughout the day and maintain a mature reef aquarium with abundant live rock and microfauna. These natural food sources greatly improve long-term success with Leopard Wrasses.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. A mature aquarium with a deep live sand bed is essential, as this species buries itself in the substrate when sleeping or stressed.
