Tomini Bristletooth Tang

Tomini Bristletooth Tang – Ctenochaetus tominiensis

The Tomini Bristletooth Tang, scientifically known as Ctenochaetus tominiensis, is also known as the Tomini Surgeonfish. It is one of the smallest and easiest tangs to keep from the Bristletooth Tang group, making it an excellent choice for medium-sized reef aquariums. Juveniles display a light brown body accented with yellow, blue, and white highlights, while adults develop richer body coloration, a blue tail, golden-yellow margins on the dorsal and anal fins, and distinctive golden spots above the eyes with a golden crescent beneath each eye.

Like all Bristletooth Tangs, it uses its specialized bristle-like teeth to scrape algae and biofilm from rocks, helping maintain a cleaner and healthier aquarium.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish, although it may become territorial toward other tangs and surgeonfish, especially similar-looking species.
Algae Control An excellent algae grazer that continuously feeds on algae and biofilm, making it highly beneficial in reef aquariums.

The Tomini Bristletooth Tang is an active and hardy species that thrives in mature aquariums with abundant live rock. Its constant grazing behavior helps maintain cleaner rockwork while supporting a healthy reef ecosystem.

Feeding

The Tomini Bristletooth Tang feeds primarily on algae and other plant-based foods but also benefits from occasional protein-rich marine foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried Seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using a seaweed clip or attach it to the live rock. A varied diet rich in marine algae helps strengthen the immune system, reduce aggression, and maintain vibrant coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Like other Bristletooth Tangs, this species performs best in mature aquariums with abundant natural algae and biofilm available for grazing.
