The Comical Blenny, though rarely seen in the aquarium trade, is a highly desirable representative of the Family Blenniidae. The Comical Blenny is an uncommon gem sure to captivate blenny aficionados or any hobbyist with its ornate pattern and coloration. In addition, its exuberant personality and comical behavior will bring lively activity to any reef aquarium.
The Comical Blenny is also aptly named the Latticed Blenny for its beautiful lattice-like patterning that is wonderfully accentuated by gentle gradations of red, white, and pink coloration. This striking pattern and coloration enable the Comical Blenny to navigate the craggy crevices and rocks of its environment while remaining camouflaged from predators. The Comical Blenny also features cryptic patterning that helps disrupt the shape of its large, forward-looking eyes.
The Comical Blenny needs a tank of at least 20 gallons generously aquascaped with live rock for perching and hiding. An aquarium bottom with mixed size rubble and gravel is also preferable to accommodate the Comical Blenny's penchant to dig. The Comical Blenny is generally peaceful, but may become territorial towards others within the same genus. The Comical Blenny adapts well to aquariums that are maintained at around 75 degrees.
Blennies normally make a good addition to reef aquariums, but use caution in smaller set ups, or with smaller fleshy corals, as individuals have been known to pick at the mantles of clams, and at fleshy large polyp stony corals when underfed. In larger reef aquariums, they rarely do damage to these corals or clams.
The diet of the Comical Blenny should include vegetable matter, including frozen and dried foods containing marine and blue-green algae. It will also feed on (and help control) algae growing in the aquarium.
