Double Saddle Butterflyfish
Double Saddle Butterflyfish – Chaetodon ulietensis
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Chaetodon ulietensis, is also commonly known as the False Falcula Butterflyfish, Doublesaddle Butterflyfish, or Saddled Butterflyfish. It is a beautiful butterflyfish species recognized for its white body covered with fine black vertical lines, a brilliant yellow rear body, and a distinctive black spot on the tail.
Its elegant appearance is further enhanced by two prominent black saddle-shaped markings across the upper body and a bold black band running through the eye, making it one of the more striking members of the butterflyfish family.
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish is an excellent choice for large fish-only marine aquariums, where it brings graceful movement and vibrant coloration.
Key Features
- Beautiful combination of white, yellow, and black coloration.
- Distinctive double saddle markings create an elegant appearance.
- Fine vertical black lines add intricate detail to the body.
- Active swimmer that brings movement and color to large aquariums.
- Adapts well to mature marine aquariums with excellent water quality.
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 450 liters (120 gallons).
- Requires plenty of open swimming space.
- Provide live rock with caves and sheltered areas for security.
- Requires stable water conditions, efficient filtration, and regular maintenance.
Compatibility & Temperament
| Aggression Level | Peaceful to semi-peaceful |
| Reef Compatibility | No |
| Coral Compatibility | May feed on mushroom corals, sea anemones, stony corals, and other sessile invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef aquariums. |
| Fish Compatibility | Compatible with most butterflyfish species and other peaceful marine fish. |
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish is best maintained in fish-only or FOWLR aquariums. While generally peaceful, it is not reef-safe because it may nip at a variety of corals and sessile invertebrates. It coexists well with most peaceful butterflyfish and other non-aggressive marine species when given sufficient swimming space.
Feeding
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish thrives on a varied diet consisting of both meaty and plant-based marine foods. Offering a diverse menu encourages strong health, vibrant coloration, and reliable feeding behavior.
Recommended foods include:
- Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
- Krill.
- Marine crustaceans.
- Frozen marine foods.
- Marine algae and vegetable-based foods.
- High-quality marine pellets and flakes.
Reefamorous Tip: Feed several small meals throughout the day and offer a balanced combination of meaty and algae-based foods. Newly imported specimens usually acclimate faster when initially offered frozen Mysis Shrimp and other highly palatable frozen foods before transitioning to prepared diets.
