The diffuser draws in fresh air from outside, thus enriching the aquarium water with oxygen.
Oxygenation is particularly recommended for sparsely planted aquariums or those with a high fish population. It is also advisable for cold-water and saltwater aquariums, or when keeping oxygen-loving fish. Even where a cover restricts the airspace above the water's surface, additional air should be supplied. Otherwise, the oxygen in this area would quickly be depleted.
