Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish – Dendrochirus brachypterus
The Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, scientifically known as Dendrochirus brachypterus, is also commonly referred to as the Shortfin Lionfish or simply the Dwarf Lionfish. It is one of the most distinctive lionfish species, admired for its large fan-like pectoral fins and striking red, white, and black vertical stripes.
Its common name, "Fuzzy", comes from its dense, full-looking fins, which give the fish a unique and elegant appearance. Despite its predatory nature, this species is relatively calm and quickly learns to recognize its owner, often responding to their presence at feeding time.

The Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish is not aggressive toward fish it cannot consume, but it will prey on small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans that fit into its mouth. It is therefore not recommended for aquariums containing ornamental shrimp or other small invertebrates.

Feeding
When first introduced to the aquarium, offering live marine feeder shrimp is often the most effective way to encourage the fish to begin feeding. Once acclimated, it should be offered a varied carnivorous diet.
Recommended foods include:
- Live or frozen shrimp.
- Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
- Krill.
- Small marine fish.
- Crustacean meat.
- High-quality frozen foods formulated for predatory marine fish.
Reefamorous Tip: Offer a varied diet and gradually train the fish to accept frozen foods. This provides balanced nutrition, enhances its natural coloration, and eliminates the need for long-term feeding of live prey.
Warning: The Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish has venomous spines on its dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins. Contact with these spines can result in a painful sting similar to a bee sting. Always exercise extreme caution during aquarium maintenance or when moving the fish, and never attempt to handle it with bare hands.
