Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish

Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish – Chaetodon decussatus

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Chaetodon decussatus, is one of the most attractive butterflyfish found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It features a silvery-white body covered with fine intersecting gray lines that form a distinctive chevron (V-shaped) pattern, giving the fish a refined and elegant appearance.

Its striking coloration is enhanced by two dark vertical bands—the first passing through the forehead and eye, and the second across the rear portion of the body. Bright yellow anal and caudal fins, accented by bold black markings, complete its beautiful and recognizable pattern.

Once fully acclimated, the Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish becomes an excellent choice for mature fish-only marine aquariums with outstanding water quality.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-peaceful
Reef Compatibility Not recommended
Social Behavior Usually solitary as a juvenile and commonly forms pairs as an adult.
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful to moderately active marine fish. Avoid highly aggressive or strongly territorial species.

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish is best suited to fish-only or FOWLR aquariums. Although generally peaceful, it is not considered reef-safe because it may nip at corals and other sessile invertebrates. It coexists well with most community marine fish when provided with adequate space and a stable environment.

Feeding

A varied marine diet is essential for maintaining excellent health and encouraging newly imported specimens to acclimate quickly.

Recommended foods include:

  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Brine Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • Finely chopped clam and crustacean meat.
  • Frozen marine foods.
  • High-quality marine pellets and flakes.

Reefamorous Tip: Feed several small meals throughout the day and offer a wide variety of marine-based foods. Newly imported butterflyfish often acclimate more successfully when initially offered frozen Mysis Shrimp and finely chopped seafood before transitioning to prepared foods.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. This species performs best in mature aquariums with stable water parameters and should only be introduced after the aquarium has fully matured.
