Melanurus Wrasse

Melanurus Wrasse – Halichoeres melanurus

The Melanurus Wrasse, scientifically known as Halichoeres melanurus, is also commonly referred to as the Tail Spot Wrasse or Hoeven's Wrasse. It is one of the most popular wrasse species for reef aquariums thanks to its vibrant coloration and practical benefits. Its body displays blue-green tones crossed by horizontal pink or yellow stripes, while juveniles show softer coloration that becomes increasingly vivid as they mature.

Beyond its attractive appearance, this species is highly valued for helping control several common reef aquarium pests, making it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful to semi-peaceful
Reef Compatibility Generally safe with corals, but caution is advised with small ornamental invertebrates
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful reef fish, including many other wrasse species
Pest-Control Benefits May consume Fireworms, Pyramidellid Snails, Flatworms, and other small reef pests

The Melanurus Wrasse is highly valued for its ability to hunt Fireworms and Pyramidellid Snails that may threaten clams. It may also consume feather duster worms, small shrimp, tubeworms, and flatworms, and may occasionally pick external parasites from other fish. For this reason, it should be monitored in aquariums containing small ornamental crustaceans or delicate worms.

Feeding

The Melanurus Wrasse requires a varied, protein-rich diet to maintain its active behavior, vibrant coloration, and overall health.

Recommended foods include:

  • Vitamin-enriched Mysis Shrimp.
  • Vitamin-enriched Brine Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • High-quality frozen marine foods.
  • Premium marine pellets and flakes.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer several small meals throughout the day to support its active lifestyle and fast metabolism. A varied diet also helps maintain strong coloration while encouraging its natural pest-hunting behavior.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. A secure aquarium lid and a sufficiently deep sand bed are essential, as this species may jump when startled and naturally buries itself in the substrate to sleep.
