Melanurus Wrasse

The Melanurus Wrasse, scientifically known as Halichoeres melanurus, is also commonly referred to as the Tail Spot Wrasse or Hoeven's Wrasse. It is one of the most popular wrasse species for reef aquariums thanks to its vibrant coloration and practical benefits. Its body displays blue-green tones crossed by horizontal pink or yellow stripes, while juveniles show softer coloration that becomes increasingly vivid as they mature.

Beyond its attractive appearance, this species is highly valued for helping control several common reef aquarium pests, making it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

The Melanurus Wrasse is highly valued for its ability to hunt Fireworms and Pyramidellid Snails that may threaten clams. It may also consume feather duster worms, small shrimp, tubeworms, and flatworms, and may occasionally pick external parasites from other fish. For this reason, it should be monitored in aquariums containing small ornamental crustaceans or delicate worms.
