Mimic Lemon Peel Tang

Mimic Lemon Peel Tang – Acanthurus pyroferus

The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus pyroferus, is also known as the Mimic Surgeonfish or Chocolate Surgeonfish. It is one of the most fascinating tang species due to its remarkable ability to mimic the appearance of the Lemonpeel Angelfish during its juvenile stage as a natural defense against predators.

As a juvenile, its body is bright yellow with blue highlights around the eyes and gill covers, closely resembling the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissimus). As it matures, the body gradually changes to a light brown or chocolate coloration, while reddish markings develop around the eyes and pectoral fins. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins take on attractive greenish tones with margins matching the body color.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 500 liters (130 gallons).
  • Requires ample open swimming space.
  • Provide abundant live rock for grazing and shelter.
  • Needs stable water quality with good water circulation.
  • Rockwork with separate territories helps minimize territorial behavior.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes, completely reef-safe
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish when provided with adequate space.
Tang Compatibility May become territorial toward other tangs and surgeonfish, particularly species with a similar shape or coloration.

The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish but may display territorial behavior toward other surgeonfish. A spacious aquarium with multiple grazing areas and clearly defined territories helps minimize aggression.

Feeding

The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang is primarily herbivorous but will also accept moderate amounts of protein-rich marine foods. A diet rich in marine algae is essential for maintaining excellent health, vibrant coloration, and a strong immune system.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae formulated for tangs.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Frozen marine foods in moderation.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using an algae clip or attach it to live rock. A diet rich in marine algae strengthens the immune system, reduces aggression, and helps maintain the fish's vibrant natural coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. This species undergoes one of the most dramatic color transformations among surgeonfish, making both juveniles and adults equally attractive additions to mature reef aquariums.
