Mimic Lemon Peel Tang

Mimic Lemon Peel Tang – Acanthurus pyroferus

The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus pyroferus, is also known as the Mimic Surgeonfish or Chocolate Surgeonfish. It is one of the most fascinating tang species thanks to its remarkable ability to mimic the appearance and coloration of certain angelfish species during its juvenile stage. Young fish display a brilliant yellow body with blue highlights around the eyes and gill covers, closely resembling the Lemonpeel Angelfish. This natural mimicry serves as a defense mechanism against predators.

As the fish matures, its coloration gradually changes to light brown or chocolate, with reddish accents around the eyes and pectoral fins. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins develop attractive green tones while retaining body-colored edges.

Feeding

The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang feeds primarily on marine algae and other plant-based foods but also benefits from occasional protein-rich marine foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried Seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using a seaweed clip or attach it to the live rock. A varied diet rich in marine algae helps strengthen the immune system, reduce aggression, and maintain vibrant coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. This species develops its characteristic chocolate coloration as it matures, making it one of the most fascinating tangs to observe over time.
