One Spot Foxface

One Spot Foxface – Siganus unimaculatus

The One Spot Foxface, scientifically known as Siganus unimaculatus, is also commonly known as the Blotched Foxface. It is one of the most attractive and popular rabbitfish species kept in marine aquariums. Its defining feature is the large black spot on the side of the body, which varies slightly in shape from one individual to another, giving each fish a unique appearance.

This species closely resembles the Foxface Lo, but the distinctive black body spot makes it easy to identify. Its brilliant yellow body combined with the striking black-and-white facial pattern creates a bold and eye-catching display in any aquarium.

Minimum Tank Size: 265 Liters Care Level: Easy Temperament: Peaceful Reef Compatible: With Caution Diet: Herbivore Size S: 5–7 cm Size M: 7–10 cm Size L: 10–15 cm

  • One of the best algae-grazing fish for marine aquariums.
  • Peaceful temperament and easy to acclimate.
  • Suitable for most medium to large marine aquariums.
  • Equipped with venomous dorsal spines for protection against predators.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 265 liters (70 gallons).

  • Provide abundant live rock for grazing and shelter.
  • Stable water quality and efficient filtration are essential.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful
Reef Compatibility With caution
Coral Compatibility Generally considered reef-safe when provided with sufficient plant-based foods. If underfed, it may nip at certain LPS corals and soft corals.
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish, including larger and moderately aggressive species. Avoid keeping multiple rabbitfish together unless the aquarium is very large.

The One Spot Foxface is an excellent community fish and an outstanding natural algae grazer. Its venomous spines discourage aggression from many larger fish, making it a suitable companion for a wide range of marine species.

Feeding

The One Spot Foxface is primarily herbivorous and thrives on a diet rich in marine algae. Providing regular plant-based foods helps maintain excellent health and greatly reduces the likelihood of coral nipping.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae.
  • Herbivore-specific marine foods.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Moderate amounts of Frozen Mysis Shrimp or Krill.

Warning: The One Spot Foxface possesses venomous dorsal spines that can inflict an extremely painful sting if handled carelessly. Always use caution during aquarium maintenance or when transferring the fish, and never attempt to catch it with bare hands.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed several times each week using an algae clip. A consistent supply of plant-based foods keeps this species healthy, encourages natural grazing behavior, and minimizes the risk of coral nipping in reef aquariums.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Although often considered reef-safe, individual fish may occasionally develop a taste for certain corals if their nutritional needs are not fully met.
