Powder Brown Tang

Powder Brown Tang – Acanthurus japonicus

The Powder Brown Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus japonicus, is one of the most elegant and highly sought-after tang species. It features a rich dark brown body highlighted by bright yellow markings running along the dorsal and anal fins, forming a distinctive Y-shaped pattern. An eye-catching orange stripe decorates the dorsal fin, while the dorsal and anal fins are edged in light blue. The blue tail, accented with a bold vertical yellow band, completes its striking appearance.

Known for its constant activity and natural algae-grazing behavior, the Powder Brown Tang is an outstanding addition to spacious marine and reef aquariums.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes, completely reef-safe
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish when provided with adequate space
Tang Compatibility Best kept as a single specimen. Use caution when housing with other tangs, especially species with a similar body shape or coloration.

The Powder Brown Tang can become territorial toward other surgeonfish, particularly those with a similar appearance. For best results, keep only one Powder Brown Tang per aquarium and provide abundant swimming space, grazing areas, and hiding places to help reduce aggressive behavior.

Feeding

The Powder Brown Tang is primarily herbivorous, although it will also accept moderate amounts of protein-rich marine foods. A diet rich in marine algae is essential for maintaining strong immunity, vibrant coloration, and long-term health.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae formulated specifically for tangs.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using a dedicated algae clip or by securing it to the live rock. A varied diet rich in marine algae helps strengthen the immune system, reduce territorial behavior, and maintain the fish's vibrant natural coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Like many Acanthurus tangs, the Powder Brown Tang is sensitive to poor water quality and external parasites, making proper quarantine and stable aquarium conditions highly recommended.
