Sailfin Tang

Sailfin Tang – Zebrasoma velifer

The Sailfin Tang, scientifically known as Zebrasoma velifer, is also commonly called the Pacific Sailfin Tang. It is one of the largest and most impressive surgeonfish, famous for its exceptionally tall dorsal and anal fins that can be fully extended to create a spectacular sail-like appearance—the feature that inspired its common name.

Its body is brown with five broad vertical yellow bands decorated by intricate fine markings, while the front of the head is covered with small pale spots. The tail begins with a bright yellow base and transitions into beautiful blue highlights, making this species one of the most eye-catching tangs in the marine aquarium hobby.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish but may become territorial toward members of its own species or other Zebrasoma tangs.
Keeping Multiple Specimens If keeping more than one Sailfin Tang, introduce them to the aquarium at the same time to help reduce territorial aggression.

The Sailfin Tang is a hardy and active species that thrives in large, mature aquariums with abundant live rock and generous swimming space. Its graceful swimming style and impressive fins make it a spectacular centerpiece fish.

Feeding

The Sailfin Tang feeds primarily on marine algae and other plant-based foods but also benefits from occasional protein-rich marine foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried Seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using a seaweed clip or attach it to the live rock. A varied, algae-rich diet helps strengthen the immune system, reduce aggression, and maintain vibrant coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Adult Sailfin Tangs grow considerably larger than juveniles and require spacious aquariums to display their full beauty and natural behavior.
