Schooling Bannerfish

Schooling Bannerfish – Heniochus diphreutes

The Schooling Bannerfish, scientifically known as Heniochus diphreutes, is also commonly referred to as the False Moorish Idol or Pennant Butterflyfish. It is one of the most attractive and popular bannerfish species, admired for its long white dorsal filament that flows gracefully through the water like a waving banner.

Its body is predominantly white with two broad black bands, while the soft dorsal fin and tail are bright yellow. Black pelvic fins, together with dark markings above the eyes and across the snout, create a bold and elegant pattern. Although it closely resembles Heniochus acuminatus, it can be distinguished by its more rounded chest and shorter snout.

Unlike many butterflyfish, the Schooling Bannerfish feeds primarily on plankton in the wild and is generally considered reef-safe when provided with a varied and sufficient diet.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful
Reef Compatibility Yes, when adequately fed
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful marine fish
Social Behavior Can be kept in groups when introduced to the aquarium at the same time, where they naturally enjoy schooling together.

The Schooling Bannerfish is a peaceful community fish that coexists well with most marine species. It is particularly impressive when maintained in a small group, as it naturally exhibits schooling behavior that creates a stunning display in larger aquariums.

Feeding

In the wild, the Schooling Bannerfish feeds primarily on marine plankton. In the aquarium, it thrives on a varied diet consisting of both meaty and plant-based foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Vitamin-enriched Brine Shrimp.
  • Frozen marine foods.
  • High-quality marine pellets and flakes.
  • Marine algae and dried seaweed offered regularly.
  • Vitamin-enriched supplements to support immune health and enhance coloration.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer several small meals throughout the day rather than one large feeding. A varied diet rich in planktonic foods, marine algae, and quality prepared foods helps maintain excellent health, vibrant coloration, and natural schooling behavior.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Although generally considered reef-safe, individual fish should always be observed after introduction to a reef aquarium, as behavior may vary between specimens.
