Scopas Tang

Scopas Tang – Zebrasoma scopas

The Scopas Tang, scientifically known as Zebrasoma scopas, is also commonly called the Brown Scopas Tang. It is one of the hardiest and most adaptable surgeonfish available for marine aquariums. The upper body displays a yellowish-brown coloration that gradually darkens into deep brown toward the lower body and tail. Fine light-blue lines cover the entire body, while the tail remains solid brown. Juveniles are generally more colorful, often displaying a subtle purple hue with proportionally larger dorsal and anal fins.

This species is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking for a durable algae-grazing tang that adapts well to established reef aquariums.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility Generally compatible with most marine fish but can become territorial toward its own species and other tangs, particularly members of the Zebrasoma genus.
Recommendation For most aquariums, keeping a single Scopas Tang is recommended to minimize territorial disputes.

The Scopas Tang is a hardy herbivore that thrives in mature aquariums with abundant live rock, making it an excellent natural algae grazer for large reef systems.

Feeding

The Scopas Tang primarily feeds on algae and other plant-based foods but also benefits from occasional protein-rich marine foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried Seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae.
  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.
  • Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried seaweed at least three times per week using a seaweed clip or secure it to live rock. A varied herbivorous diet helps strengthen the immune system, maintain vibrant coloration, and reduce territorial aggression.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on shipment and availability. Juveniles typically display brighter colors than adults, with coloration gradually darkening as they mature.
