Orangeshoulder Tang

Orangeshoulder Tang – Acanthurus olivaceus

The Orangeshoulder Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus olivaceus, is also commonly referred to as the Orange-epaulette Surgeonfish, Orangespot Surgeonfish, or Orangeband Surgeonfish. It is one of the most attractive tang species, displaying a remarkable transformation in coloration as it matures.

As a juvenile, the fish has an almost entirely bright yellow body with subtle blue edging along the dorsal and anal fins. As it grows, the front half of the body changes to a pale gray, while the rear half develops a bluish-gray coloration. A vivid orange patch surrounded by a dark gray border appears above the pectoral fin, giving the species its common name. Its distinctive lyre-shaped tail further enhances its elegant appearance.

The Orangeshoulder Tang is an excellent choice for large reef aquariums. Compared with many other tang species, it generally has a calmer temperament while still bringing constant movement, striking coloration, and natural algae-grazing behavior to the aquarium.

Minimum Tank Size: 680 Liters Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Semi-Peaceful Reef Compatible: Yes Diet: Herbivore Size S: 5–7 cm Size M: 7–10 cm Size L: 10–15 cm

Key Features

  • Undergoes a beautiful and dramatic color transformation as it matures.
  • Features a distinctive orange shoulder patch that gives it a unique appearance.
  • Helps control natural algae growth within the aquarium.
  • An active swimmer that adds movement and energy to the tank.
  • Reef-safe and suitable for aquariums containing corals and invertebrates.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 680 liters (180 gallons).
  • Requires a large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space.
  • Live rock should be provided with suitable areas for grazing and hiding.
  • Requires stable water quality and good water movement.
  • A well-established aquarium with natural algae growth is highly recommended.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-peaceful
Reef Compatibility Yes, generally safe with corals and invertebrates
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most marine fish when provided with adequate swimming space
Tang Compatibility Generally less aggressive toward other tangs than many similar species

The Orangeshoulder Tang is generally calmer toward other surgeonfish than many closely related tang species. When keeping more than one specimen, introducing a smaller juvenile into an aquarium that already contains a mature individual may help reduce territorial behavior and improve compatibility.

Feeding

Although the Orangeshoulder Tang will accept meaty foods, its diet should consist primarily of marine algae and other plant-based foods to support healthy digestion, immune function, coloration, and long-term well-being.

Recommended foods include:

  • Dried seaweed (Nori).
  • Marine algae formulated specifically for tangs.
  • High-quality vegetable-based pellets and flakes.
  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill and other frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: Offer dried marine seaweed at least three times per week using a dedicated algae clip or by securing it to the live rock. Regular access to plant-based foods supports the immune system, helps reduce aggressive behavior, and maintains the fish’s health, activity, and natural coloration.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. The Orangeshoulder Tang requires a large, mature, and stable aquarium with excellent water quality and sufficient swimming space.
