Singular Bannerfish – Heniochus singularius
The Singular Bannerfish, scientifically known as Heniochus singularius, is one of the most elegant members of the Chaetodontidae (Butterflyfish) family. It combines an attractive appearance with relatively easy care, making it a desirable choice for experienced marine aquarists.
Like other Heniochus species, it is distinguished by its long, banner-like dorsal fin that gives the fish its graceful and instantly recognizable silhouette. Although it resembles several other bannerfish species, the Singular Bannerfish is considerably less common in the marine aquarium trade, making it a prized addition for hobbyists seeking something unique.
Its coloration is especially striking, with a white border surrounding the mouth, followed by a bold black band running through the eye and beneath the chin. A second black band crosses the middle of the body, while the rear half transitions into a vivid canary yellow extending across the dorsal fin and tail.
The fish also changes in appearance as it matures. Juveniles display a longer dorsal banner and a more slender body, while adults develop a deeper body profile, a slightly shorter banner, and subtle patterning that enhances their elegant appearance.
Key Features
- Elegant banner-like dorsal fin creates a graceful appearance.
- Beautiful combination of white, black, and vivid canary yellow coloration.
- A relatively uncommon species in the marine aquarium hobby.

- Becomes a hardy and rewarding aquarium fish once fully acclimated.
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 475 liters (125 gallons).
- Requires plenty of open swimming space.
- Provide live rock with caves and sheltered areas for security.
- May require additional attention during the initial acclimation period.
- Thrives in stable water conditions with moderate water movement.
Compatibility & Temperament
| Aggression Level | Peaceful |
| Reef Compatibility | With caution |
| Fish Compatibility | Compatible with most peaceful marine fish |
| Coral Compatibility | May nip at certain corals and sessile invertebrates; observation is recommended in reef aquariums |
The Singular Bannerfish is generally peaceful and can be housed with most community marine fish. Multiple individuals may also be kept together when introduced to the aquarium at the same time. In reef aquariums, however, individual behavior may vary, and some specimens may occasionally nip at corals or sessile invertebrates.
Feeding
In the wild, the Singular Bannerfish feeds primarily on marine plankton. In the aquarium, it readily accepts a wide variety of prepared and fresh foods, making it relatively easy to feed once acclimated.
Recommended foods include:
- Frozen marine foods.
- Freeze-dried foods.
- Fresh seafood-based foods.
- High-quality marine flakes.
- Premium marine pellets.
- Marine algae and vegetable-based foods offered regularly.
- Vitamin-enriched supplements to support immune health and enhance coloration.
Reefamorous Tip: Offer a varied diet in several small feedings throughout the day. A diverse menu rich in both meaty and plant-based foods helps maintain vibrant coloration, supports a strong immune system, and encourages natural feeding behavior.
