Six Bar Angelfish – Pomacanthus sexstriatus
The Six Bar Angelfish, scientifically known as Pomacanthus sexstriatus, is also commonly referred to as the Sixbanded Angelfish or Six Striped Angelfish. It is one of the largest and most impressive marine angelfish species, admired for its bold coloration and commanding presence.
Adults display a light brown to beige body marked with five broad dark brown vertical bands, while a distinctive white sixth band appears directly behind the eye. The entire body is covered with fine dark blue spots, with even brighter sapphire-blue markings decorating the tail and rear portion of the anal fin, creating an exceptionally elegant appearance.
An interesting characteristic of this species is its ability to produce low humming or clicking sounds when threatened—a behavior well known to divers and marine life enthusiasts.
Key Features
- Beautiful combination of brown, white, and sapphire-blue markings.
- One of the largest and most impressive marine angelfish species.
- Creates a striking centerpiece in large marine aquariums.
- Active, curious personality with an impressive presence.
- Ideal for spacious fish-only marine systems.
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 830 liters (220 gallons).
- Requires extensive open swimming space.
- Provide abundant live rock with numerous caves and hiding places.
- Requires excellent water quality, efficient filtration, and stable water parameters.
Compatibility & Temperament
| Aggression Level | Semi-aggressive |
| Reef Compatibility | No |
| Coral Compatibility | May nip at stony corals, soft corals, Tridacna clams, and other sessile invertebrates. |
| Fish Compatibility | Compatible with most large marine fish that are not overly aggressive. Sexing is extremely difficult, and captive breeding remains uncommon. |
The Six Bar Angelfish is best suited to large fish-only or FOWLR aquariums. It is not considered reef-safe due to its tendency to feed on corals, giant clams, and sessile invertebrates. When provided with ample swimming space and stable water conditions, it becomes a spectacular display fish.
Feeding
The Six Bar Angelfish requires a varied omnivorous diet combining marine algae with protein-rich foods to maintain excellent health, coloration, and long-term vitality.
Recommended foods include:
- Spirulina-based foods.
- Marine algae and seaweed.
- Prepared angelfish formulas containing marine sponge.
- Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
- Frozen shrimp and other marine foods.
- Crustaceans and other meaty marine foods.
Reefamorous Tip: Feed this species at least three times daily with a varied diet that includes marine algae, sponge-based angelfish preparations, and protein-rich frozen foods. A diverse diet helps maintain vibrant coloration, supports immune health, and encourages natural feeding behavior.
