Six Line Wrasse – Pseudocheilinus hexataenia

The Six Line Wrasse, scientifically known as Pseudocheilinus hexataenia, is also commonly known as the Sixline Wrasse or Sixstripe Wrasse. It is one of the most popular wrasse species in reef aquariums thanks to its brilliant coloration, compact size, and natural ability to help control several common aquarium pests.

Its orange body is decorated with six vivid blue horizontal stripes extending from the head to the tail. Males often display even more intense coloration during courtship and territorial displays.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Semi-aggressive
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility May become aggressive toward peaceful wrasses, shy fish, and timid tank mates, especially after establishing its territory.
Pest-Control Benefits Helps control Pyramidellid Snails, Flatworms, Bristleworms, and various other small unwanted crustaceans.

The Six Line Wrasse is highly valued for its natural pest-control abilities, but its territorial behavior can become more pronounced as it matures. For the best compatibility, it is often recommended to introduce this species after other peaceful reef fish have already established themselves.

Feeding

When first introduced to the aquarium, the Six Line Wrasse may be encouraged to feed with live marine shrimp. Once acclimated, it readily accepts a varied, protein-rich diet.

Recommended foods include:

  • Vitamin-enriched Mysis Shrimp.
  • Vitamin-enriched Brine Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • High-quality frozen marine foods.
  • Premium marine pellets and flakes.

Reefamorous Tip: Feed two to three times daily with a varied diet to maintain vibrant coloration and encourage healthy, active behavior. A mature aquarium with abundant live rock will also provide natural prey between feedings.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. Although reef-safe with corals, this species can become territorial toward smaller or more timid fish as it matures.
