Sleeper Gold Head Goby

Sleeper Gold Head Goby – Valenciennea strigata

The Sleeper Gold Head Goby, scientifically known as Valenciennea strigata, is also commonly referred to as the Golden Head Sleeper Goby, Yellowheaded Sleeper Goby, and Blueband Sleeper Goby. It is one of the most popular sand-sifting gobies in the reef aquarium hobby, prized for both its attractive appearance and its natural ability to keep the substrate clean.

This species features a brilliant golden-yellow head accented by a vivid sapphire-blue stripe beneath each eye, while the rest of the body is creamy white. It spends most of its day continuously sifting mouthfuls of sand to extract tiny organisms, naturally aerating and cleaning the substrate in the process.

Minimum Tank Size: 115 Liters Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Peaceful Reef Compatible: Yes Diet: Carnivore Size S: 5–7 cm Size M: 7–10 cm Size L: 10–14 cm

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful
Reef Compatibility Yes
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful reef fish; may become territorial toward its own species unless kept as a bonded pair.
Invertebrate Compatibility Safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates.

Sleeper Gold Head Gobies naturally sift sand to extract tiny worms, crustaceans, and microorganisms, making them one of the most effective fish for maintaining a healthy and well-aerated sand bed.

Feeding

Although this goby obtains much of its nutrition from the substrate, it should also receive a varied supplemental diet in captivity.

Recommended foods include:

  • Vitamin-enriched Mysis Shrimp.
  • Vitamin-enriched Brine Shrimp.
  • Live Blackworms.
  • Frozen marine foods.
  • High-quality carnivore marine pellets.

Offer several small meals throughout the day, particularly in newer aquariums or systems with limited natural microfauna.

Reefamorous Tip: Sleeper Gold Head Gobies perform best in mature reef aquariums with a deep live sand bed rich in natural microfauna. Avoid keeping them in bare-bottom aquariums, as they rely on sand for both feeding and natural behavior.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on shipment and availability.
