Spotted Watchman Goby
Spotted Watchman Goby – Cryptocentrus cinctus
The Spotted Watchman Goby, scientifically known as Cryptocentrus cinctus, is a regional color variant of the popular Yellow Watchman Goby originating from the Philippines. It displays subtle sandy-yellow coloration highlighted by jewel-like spots across the head and fins, giving it a refined and natural appearance in the aquarium.
This species is well known for its curious personality, often peeking from the entrance of its burrow as if standing guard over its territory. It can also form a remarkable symbiotic relationship with Pistol Shrimp, where the shrimp excavates and maintains the burrow while the goby acts as the lookout for potential predators.
Key Features
- Subtle sandy coloration with attractive jewel-like spots.
- Curious personality that frequently watches its surroundings from the burrow entrance.
- Helps sift and move sand while maintaining its burrow.
- Completely reef-safe.
- Forms a fascinating symbiotic partnership with Pistol Shrimp.
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 115 liters (30 gallons).
- Requires a fine sand substrate suitable for burrowing.
- Provide live rock and pieces of coral rubble for shelter.
- Needs stable water parameters and open swimming space.
- A tightly fitted lid is essential, as this species may jump through small openings.
Compatibility & Temperament
| Aggression Level | Peaceful |
| Reef Compatibility | Yes |
| Fish Compatibility | Compatible with most peaceful reef fish and rarely aggressive toward other species. |
| Recommendation | May become territorial toward its own species, so it is best kept singly or as a compatible pair. It is an ideal companion for a Pistol Shrimp. |
The Spotted Watchman Goby spends much of its time near the entrance of its burrow, keeping watch while maintaining one of the most fascinating partnerships found in marine aquariums.
Feeding
The Spotted Watchman Goby requires a varied protein-rich diet.
Recommended foods include:
- Mysis Shrimp.
- Brine Shrimp.
- Finely chopped table shrimp.
- Frozen marine foods.
- High-quality pellets formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Reefamorous Tip: Feed at least twice daily and provide a mature sand bed with plenty of burrowing opportunities. Pairing this species with a Pistol Shrimp creates one of the most rewarding natural behaviors to observe in a reef aquarium.
