Threeband Pennant Butterflyfish – Heniochus chrysostomus
The Threeband Pennant Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Heniochus chrysostomus, is also commonly referred to as the Threeband Pennant Coralfish or Pennant Bannerfish. It is one of the most elegant butterflyfish species, recognized by its long, feather-like dorsal fin, bright white body, three distinctive vertical brown bands, a dark eye stripe, and a striking yellow patch surrounding the mouth.
Combining graceful beauty with a peaceful temperament, this species makes an excellent addition to large marine aquariums, especially when housed with other calm community fish.
Key Features
- Long, banner-like dorsal fin creates an elegant and distinctive appearance.
- Beautiful white, brown, and yellow coloration with a striking facial pattern.
- Graceful swimming behavior adds movement and elegance to the aquarium.
- Can be kept as a bonded pair when both fish are introduced together.
- An excellent choice for spacious marine aquariums.
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Aquarium Size: Approximately 475 liters (125 gallons).
- Provide a rockscape with caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas for security.
- Live rock helps improve acclimation and encourages natural feeding behavior.
- Acclimates more successfully when housed with small, peaceful tank mates.
- Requires stable water quality and plenty of open swimming space.
Compatibility & Temperament
| Aggression Level | Peaceful |
| Reef Compatibility | With caution |
| Fish Compatibility | Compatible with most peaceful marine fish |
| Coral Compatibility | May nip at certain corals and sessile invertebrates, so close observation is recommended in reef aquariums |
The Threeband Pennant Butterflyfish is generally peaceful and does well in community marine aquariums. A compatible pair can often be maintained successfully when both fish are introduced at the same time. In reef aquariums, however, some individuals may occasionally nip at corals or sessile invertebrates.
Feeding
The Threeband Pennant Butterflyfish thrives on a varied diet that combines both plant-based and meaty marine foods. Offering a diverse selection of foods helps maintain excellent health, vibrant coloration, and natural feeding behavior.
Recommended foods include:
- Marine herbivore preparations.
- Dried seaweed (Nori).
- Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
- Krill.
- Frozen marine foods.
- High-quality marine pellets and flakes.
Reefamorous Tip: Feed several small meals throughout the day instead of one large feeding. A varied diet containing both marine algae and protein-rich foods helps strengthen the immune system, encourages natural feeding behavior, and maintains vibrant coloration.
