Yellow Goatfish

Yellow Goatfish – Parupeneus cyclostoma

The Yellow Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus cyclostoma, is also commonly referred to as the Yellowsaddle Goatfish or Goldsaddle Goatfish. It is a striking marine fish distinguished by its brilliant golden-yellow coloration extending from head to tail. Beneath its mouth are a pair of sensitive barbels, which it uses to probe the sand in search of food, creating fascinating natural foraging behavior.

This species has become increasingly popular among marine aquarists thanks to its constant activity and habit of sifting through the substrate, adding movement and a natural dynamic to the aquarium floor.

Compatibility & Temperament

Aggression Level Peaceful
Reef Compatibility With caution
Invertebrate Compatibility May feed on small invertebrates living within the sand bed. Larger specimens may prey on small crustaceans, marine worms, and any fish small enough to swallow.
Fish Compatibility Compatible with most peaceful and non-aggressive marine fish.

The Yellow Goatfish is generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish but is a natural predator of small benthic animals. It is best suited for aquariums without ornamental shrimp or very small fish that could become prey.

Feeding

The Yellow Goatfish requires a protein-rich diet to support its active lifestyle and high metabolism.

Recommended foods include:

  • Frozen Mysis Shrimp.
  • Krill.
  • Marine shrimp.
  • Marine crustaceans.
  • Pieces of marine fish.
  • High-quality frozen marine foods.

Reefamorous Tip: This species has a high metabolic rate, so feeding 4–5 small meals per day is recommended to maintain optimal health, vibrant coloration, and natural foraging behavior.

Note: Actual fish sizes may vary slightly depending on the shipment and current availability. The Yellow Goatfish constantly sifts the substrate while searching for food, making a soft sandy bottom essential for its long-term health and natural behavior.
